matryoshka mahem: trend or not?

after seeing two postings on web urbanist on the diversity of matryoshka (nesting) dolls, i decided to drag mine out for comparison...and a photo session! i have three different sets, thus making it a "collection". my favorite is the one of my family, (including black lab) because it shows both my mom and me wearing a piece of our own jewelry: that's cool! i also have a bill clinton one: not sure which one, if any, is hilary, but monica lewinsky is a stand out in her blue dress! i also have two mini ones i received as a child when my parents went to russia in the seventies. some of the other images are from weburbanist, the others are from an etsy search for "nesting dolls". from madonna, to russian aristocratics, endangered animals and mp-3 charging stations, chess men and robots: those nesting dolls have it all. enjoy!

poppies are mind blowing

i love poppies! so i made this ring out of a seed head. i lost wax cast it sterling and set it on a band cast from a lily branch. mind blowing.

i still have my childhood coloring books...and i love dresses: i think i want this one for my birthday! such a great design from dutch artists Berber Soepboer & Michiel Schuurman via dornob.

according to dvice, "seed bombs" are not a new concept, but these biodegradable shells are on a mission to fight global desertification. i like this!

chinese lantern from my garden

i managed to snap a photo last friday of a custom order from my herban elements shop before i shipped it to heather in arizona. i lost wax cast in sterling a tiny chinese lantern from my garden and hung it on this long chain i fabricated. the clasp is a branch of a crocosmia lily, 'lucifer'.

cranial hiccups!

cranial hiccups mystified me with this cool treasury of some of her favs in turquoise. she makes great bags also as well as wonderful cards, prints and other lovely paper goods.

my friend dawn from poppi shop sent me this awesome stop animation video entitled Bathtub IV from Keith Loutit on Vimeo. actually, it is probably not stop animation but tilt-shift photography. whatever...it's cool.

top chef: the tour bus

i will watch any reality crap on bravo: some of it is actually really good! not so sure about last night's the fashion show with issac mizrahi, but top chef rocks! one top chef contestant, chef spike opened up an amazing burger joint, good stuff eatery on capitol hill here in dc. now he is on tour and will be serving up deliciousness from a portable kitchen housed on a tractor trailer (they call it a tour bus: whatever). saturday the bus stops in adam's morgan. pre-registration is closed, but additional seats will be available on a first come, first served basis. i think it's free!

bird watching

tonight i worked late again in the studio: this time not distracted by the nba play-offs! i made one of my favorite (and best selling!) items: my little enameled soaring birds. they remind of how much i enjoy bird watching now. they are cute and colorful, just like the real thing! i started bird watching when i injured my knee a few years ago. now, not only do i have a bird identification app on my iphone, but i am also a member of cornell university's project e-bird. i have decided birds are kind of awesome.

boots galore

today was a bit cool so out came the boots! I wasn't the only one sporting em though! mr. mcgregor took these straight from the ranch to my living room.

bindweed is threatening to take over my front garden...i already dug it up, ripped it out and mulched heavily, but after several days of rain they are back! its not all bad though: i made these pretty things from the flowers!
