tavi is my favorite mini fashionista

tavi claims to be a fashion rookie, but clearly she has a deep, deep fashion sense. this 13 year old fashion blogger, new girl in town and insightful person has a great blog that is well written, funny and very interesting. so interesting that the ladies at rodarte partnered with her and target to publicize their new collection for target...which is sold out, so forget about it unless you want to buy via ebay. i got three dresses. i rocked this one on christmas at the in-laws.

extra help for the holidays at the post office

i had to ship several over-sees orders from herban elements and high contrast today: the line was out the door at the post office. mothers let children run wild: round and round, repeatedly punching the life-size cut out of a postal worker, while the dutiful clerks at the united states postal service worked over time...not.

a show of hands

i
love retail! so, i don't do much wholesale these days. one of the galleries a really believe in is a show of hands in delray, alexandria, virginia. not only do they sell beautiful things: they are honest people who believe in their community and their artists: a true rarity in ethical behavior these days.
please make plans for a shopping trip to their space on mount vernon avenue because its awesome!

driving past the lincoln memorial

yeah...headed to jimmy's studio on capitol hill so we can go to delray in alexandria to exchange our work at a show of hands gallery. i am currently driving past the washington monument and frankly, i never get sick of admiring dc's beauty.

downtown holiday market

this is my last day at the downtown holiday market, but I wanted to highlight some of my awesome neighbors ... javid of kashmir imports has the most exquisite hand embroidered textiles. I bought one of his jackets for my mom's birthday. if you can't make it to the downtown holiday market today, check out his website @ www. kashmirimports.com.

top chef washington, dc

ok: dc has risen to the top of the proverbial 'food chain' as far as american cities go these days: everybody wants to be come here, be seen here, make their mark here. so why not have top chef dc?, asks chef spike. you can participate in the lobby-ing for top chef washington, dc.: suggest possible locations, ingredients, events, elimination challenges and guest judges at capital spice, and possibly win top chef prizes and shiz. hurry up though: you only have til 10:00 pm tomorrow to do it-right before the top chef finale-so get creative and be decisive!

how to cook a thanksgiving turkey on the grill

i had big plans this weekend, but due to the dog's surgery on friday i kind of hung out with him saturday and sunday: i organized my clothes/closet when he was relaxing in bed...i watched a little tv when he sat on the sofa looking out of the window at the blue jays and squirrels: i saw bobby flay from the food network cook his thanksgiving turkey on the grill: intriguing! coming from california, i use my grill almost every night to cook everything from vegetables to pizza, so this is a technique i want to try! i love turkey and could eat turkey sandwiches forever, so i think i am going to do this. my husband works at a family company and every year in conjunction with a food drive for s.o.m.e., all 300+ employees receives a turkey for thanksgiving (and a ham at christmas!). so, my dead bird will be here tomorrow, and I'm cooking it-stuffed with wild rice and sausage stuffing-on the grill... i better get a new meat thermometer as i melted the last one...oh wait: this wild rice and goat cheese dressing sounds way better!

new age music: there's an app for that!

not that i want you (or me) to sound like michael bolton (notice: no link?) or yanni...but i love me some iphone apps!...and Ocarina is yet another app in my arsenal of silliness...and time wasters. the developers use the Iphone’s built-in movement sensors and touch screen to form a keyed instrument…or a kind of flute, by detecting the passage of your blown breath and translating it into intensity of sound. you can upload your new age masterpiece to the Ocarina online community and listen to the work of others. can you get more contemporary than a virtual instrument that automatically shares its output ? ...and its an iphone, of course: how cool are you?

master of your own domain? there's an app for that!

master your domain with the master gardener app for iphone and itouch! i have been using master gardener for a few days to organize my winter crops and plan for seedlings in january. i have a wish list of edibles i want to grow consistently, and the huge data base of 40,000 plants makes specifications so easy, plus i have wikipedia access for research and link purposes. i have to say: when i typed in 'arugula' i got a blank screen and had to enter it manually, but it was really simple and quick, frankly! i can easily add other gardens to my journal and include my own photos for reference. it is a gardening tool i can utilize in so many different ways! excuse me for saying 'it is kind of awesome!', because my brother, anita and myself designed it after a conversation last christmas dinner...eleven months later-and a lot of hard work- it was accepted into the apple store last thursday! please check it out and let me know what you think: we will try to improve it and version 2 is already in the apple pipeline for release asap. i love my iphone and this is just another reason i cant live without it: please join me!

nor' easter + tropical depression ida= nor'ida

the weather channel got a big kick out of themselves for coming up with the name "nor' Ida" to describe this week's storm, which combined a nor' easter with tropical storm ida. whatever...the water got deep around here! the water was over the sea wall during today's high tide. you can see the water line in the leaves from yesterday.
no damage though so, all is well!

please note my awesome bertoia chairs which I got at a tag sale for $5 each. yes: i said "FIVE dollars"!

thievery corporation on current tv

i love thievery corporation: they produce one of the few types of music the mister and i agree on! not sure if that has anything to do with the fact he used to work with them at the fifth column nite bar/art club back in the day, but whatever! tonight, current tv features the hometown-dc mega stars in their new embedded program thievery corporation underground dc djs @ 11 est. if you are not familiar with thievery, they are a sound system, featuring two djs, live band and multiple rotating vocalist to create their unique sound. i never miss an opportunity to see and hear the group. above is a photo i took with the iphone from the upper bar at their show @ the 9:30 club last january 28th: so great!

taxidermy squirrel-fish

like my mother said, "if you dont have anything nice to say..." but regretsy is so funny! there is some weird stuff on etsy: glad i dont have to sift through it all to find all my loves wrapped up into one. i just noticed the price has increased from $350 to $1000 since it was featured in regretsy. sheesh: almost made me upchuck my squirrel fish sticks.

the metropolitan cooking & entertaining show

too bad the metropolitan cooking & entertaining show wasnt any of the last three rainy weekends: it is supposed to be nice today, and i really dont want to be indoors. but if i did, i am not sure i would pay up up $75 to see food network stars Paula Deen, Giada De Laurentiis, Guy Fieri, Tyler Florence or the Neelys present live cooking demos or sign a cook book. Top Chef Contestant Richard Blais will be hosting Culinary Innovations seminar...i think i will head to chef spike's and grab a burger instead. but if you want to check it out, it runs saturday 9-7 and sunday 10-5 @ the convention center.

colorWatch app for iPhone

ok...it's monday and we all got an extra hour of sleep thanks to the end of day lite savings time. but, im pretty exhausted from spending the weekend changing time on my vast collection of clocks: i think i have over a hundred... make that a hundred and one cuz i just loaded the colorWatch app onto my iphone! This is the iphone-Version of the Chromachron Watch, designed in the 1970's by swiss designer Tian Harlan. The color circle represents the course of the day by light and color degrees. very colourful! With a little practice, you'll be able to tell the time with an accuracy of about 3-5 minutes. Not exact? Well, that's the point! By using the Chromachron watch, you'll be less stressed, because it's always "about... 5:00"! hey, that's the cocktail hour: lush!

what time is it?

i collect clocks, so i really never have to ask that question out loud...but changing the entire collection is super time consuming when daylight savings time comes and goes. found this awesome vintage howard miller starburst clock at a tag sale:$15.00!

moustache salt and pepper shakers

the moustache trend remains strong! if a large stuffed 'stache is too bold of a statement for you, put the hotness on the table with these moustache salt and pepper shakers from paper doll woodshop on etsy. super bad!

marine corps marathon street closures

today is the the 34th annual marine corps marathon! its too late to enter the people's marathon (ahhh!) but you could cheer these hardcore athletes on...or watch it on tv...or just avoid the traffic jams due to street closures in the area. i heard a spa is trying to set the guinness book of world record for foot massage by rubbing 400+ feet (200 people) of the runners. super stinky!
